Maaeri: A Love Letter to the Indipop Years

▶ Watch the cover: Maaeri on YouTube

Why this song

There was a time when Hindi music did not have to come from a film to matter. Late nineties, early two thousands. Cassettes, Channel V, MTV countdowns, and a wave of bands and solo artists who made Indipop feel like it was ours. Euphoria sat right at the centre of it.

Palash Sen and the band had this rare thing: songs that sounded like a rock band and still felt completely desi. Dhoom pichak dhoom got everyone jumping. But Maaeri was the one that stayed. It came out on Phir Dhoom in 2000, and it is the kind of song that quietly finds you again years later, usually when you are far from home.

This cover is my small thank you to that whole era, and to the band that soundtracked a lot of it.

How it was made

I kept it close to how I would play it for myself at home. Vocals and keys were recorded live, because I wanted the feel of someone sitting at the piano and singing it rather than a polished studio take.

After that I layered in strings and some synth elements to give the arrangement a little more space and warmth, without taking away from the voice and the piano. Everything you hear, I played and sang.

What the song means

Maaeri is a song about memory. About the way thoughts of your mother come back to you at odd moments, and how much of home you carry around without noticing. Palash Sen's melody does a lot of the work. It is simple, it sits right in the middle of the voice, and it lets the words land.

What I love most is that it never gets dramatic. It just stays honest. That restraint is very Indipop to me. Those songs did not need a big screen or a big budget. They needed a good tune, a real feeling, and someone willing to sing it straight.

Singing it now, more than twenty-five years later, it felt less like a performance and more like a phone call home.

Sign-off

If Maaeri was part of your growing up too, I hope this takes you back for a minute and a half. Tell me which Indipop song you still know every word of. I might just cover it next.
